After a truly shocking week at the races. Escholido! Pah! We are making the way for an old friend, The Golf Tipster to give us his views on the Open championship. No, not the British Open, the Open Championship...
He writes...
Back in Kent, Royal Sandwich to be precise, this years Open is already bubbling over with excitement and they've not hit a ball yet. Thanks to Twitter, we know that the course is hard and bumpy (thanks Luuuuke) and blowing a gale today (thanks to my old colleague Jock Howard who has just watched Jeff Overton and TFC take a few grand off Dusty Bin and Tangerine Boy)
It's a wide open field and the way that Luke Donald closed out the Scottish Open, you'd wonder why he isn't a very short favourite. Obviously, Rory is the reason and it's entirely feasible that they will be battling it out down the stretch, possibly a few shots clear of the field. For the first time ever I might be tipping a golf quinella. If they actually exist?
If we were taking a dream trifecta, I might include Sergio.
It's just plain ridiculous that the Bentley driving bookmakers have him priced at 25/1 when people like Cink, Choi and numerous other 2011 winners are three figure prices, but perhaps the new putting grip will see him making a series of shorties on the way home to victory?
Want to tip him, but I can't. Wife will be happy if he wins though.
I do give KJ Choi a chance based on form and tenacity. Tipped by the Sporting Life and 50/1 seems generous. Horrible links record though. Stuart Cink? Missed the cut in whatever this weeks tournament was but who can blame him for having his sights set on Blighty rather than Illinois?
Cink has proved time and again that he can do the Climie Fisher* amd it will be no surprise to see him prominent come Sunday night. 100/1 and 20/1 a place is just plain daft if like me you think he's at least as good a chance as Bubba (don't expect a warm welcome mon ami) or Phil.
Who incidentally is currently trending on twitter thanks to @paulmahoneygolf under the hash tag "leftycantplaylinksgolffortoffee". Hilarious. Fore right!
And then there's Jeff Overton.
I liked the way he performed in the worst that wales threw at him in the Ryder Cup. Have had him in my blackbook for a while and hearing from @jockhoward that he won the money today is good enough for me to take the 140/1 or more appropriately the 28/1 for first five. Five chances to win and four times better odds than Rory? That's the bet.I'm even thinking of the 9/1 to finish in the first ten!
Betting aside, who do we want to win? We won't get rich backing him so we won't but in the name of all that is good for the future of golf....
C'MON RORY!
